The lengths to which the Lord will go to show
Us who he is astound us every year.
He takes on symbols those who see might know,
If they have eyes to see and ears to hear.
If they had heard the prophets, and they had,
They’d see what he was doing, and they did,
And yet somehow they missed him, being glad
Enough with sights behind their eyelids hid.
A show of force preferred, the donkey colt
Ignored, the striding victor, David’s son,
Hosanna! Wave your rebel-palm, revolt!
Of parody and paradox, there’s none.
The crowd enjoys the show the Lord prepares,
But to perceive his message, no one dares.
