Tuesday of Holy Week Sonnet

Red Parable – Hans Hoffman – 1964

Tuesday of Holy Week Sonnet
an Ode to Parables

To find a weed that truly is a flower,
To draw a circle as any other square,
Of sons and fathers, farmers, pigs and towers;
The sheep and maidens, millstones You saw there
You made a lasting tome, so brief as to
Beguile that word, and yet much longer than
All reader’s readings have yet found; ’cause new,
So new, and newer truths stretch out from then
Into our just as vague and complex now;
Requiring many reconsiderations,
And many wondering ifs, buts, whos and hows.
You broke the ground for will’s imagination
And built a house of story for our hearts,
Where we’ll find life until death’s ending starts.
