Reorientation

More than a score of years ago I learned
Big Dipper spills her cup into the North,
Merak and Dubhe have forever burned
An arrow aimed at North Star’s clear “Go forth!”
It seemed like magic to know the way,
No matter where I wandered, she was found,
A trust in heaven that could keep at bay
The doubts of lefts and rights down on the ground.
So doubt I didn’t and all around I went,
Exploring under skies that said, “No fear!”
With glowing hope of learning I was sent.
But here on this side of that score of years

I know when standing just here by my car,
My neighbor’s maple also shoots that star.
