The Long Shadows

When was the first time you saw the long shad
Ows? Can you bring to light the light that stretched
Your darkness out behind you like a sad
Ness? Or before you like the joy of sketched
Tomorrows? Or both at once as it oft
En is? Remember the white gravel walk
From back behind the barn where grass so soft
Ly grew? Remember your tender toes talk
Ing tough when stones which had found themselves scatt
Ered out beyond their proper place announced
Themselves in the parted blades of grass that
Had hidden them from sight and step? You bounced
On anyway because against the white stones shining in the drive
There was a moving length of shadow that was moving because you were alive.
